Parking Brake 1987 John Deere Ford Chassis Jim Kountz 7-16-09
I have a 1987 Winnebago Cheiftain on a John Deere chassis with the 460 engine. My parking brake is not working. I do not have a pedal or lever to push/pull to set the brake, its supposed to be automatic. The only thing I have is a "Park Release" cable on the dash. Here are my symptoms.
When I put the unit in park, the "Park Brake" light comes on the dash but the unit will still roll. When I place it in gear and try to move it lunges like the brake is on somewhat or just a little. If I then pull the Park Release cable the unit will then roll freely and go on as normal. Then when I stop, put it in park, same thing, I have a light but the unit will roll. Seems to me its working but just not enough to hold the unit in place. Is there an adjustment I can do? If so how? I was told by one RV mechanic that the Ford chassis didnt have an auto park brake but mine sure as heck does.
If I try to take off without pulling the release cable you can sure tell something is trying to hold it back so that kind of supports my theory of just needing adjustment.
Any thoughts anyone??

Thanks!!

Jim

Not sure if you got an naswer on your brake problem. You most certainly do have an auto parking brake system on that John Deere. It may not be called AutoPark. When you place the shift lever in Park the auto matic parking brake engages, which is a brake drum and brake assembly behind the transmission. The drum is on the driveshaft and when the brake shoes engage the wheels should not roll via the driveshaft. Your brake shoes may need adjustment or replacement.

I have an 1988 Superchief..the pump for the brake system is leaking behind the pully seal..dose anyone know how to get this pump out of the chassie?? I have laid under there for hours trying to figure it out?? AND can I get a rebuild kit or do I have to buy the whole pump??

I was able to use some Lucas power steering fluid and got that seal to stop leaking. Your pump for the hydroboost uses AT fluid so just add the Lucas to it and see if that helps.
If not you will need to pull the pump and take it to Ford to see if you can get a kit or replacement.
