AUTO PARK BRAKE Rick 5-11-09
98 Bounder- The auto park brake does not engage. The question is. When, I put the RV in park the RV will continue to move (The RV will roll forward or back when it is in park)Is this a auto park problem or do need to get the transmission check. Rick

Go to http://www.rvmechanic.com/current_category.2176/Forum.53029/forum_thread_full.html

for a substantive discussion about this parking brake. Also, go to Workhorse site (assuming you have a Chevy engine); you will find a manual about your chassis, in the PARTS MANUALS section(You will have to register to get the download).

You probably need a pressure valve still available through GM dealers.

Sounds like the brake, which sits behind the transmission, was disabled; without oil pressure to release it in drive, it stays set and the RV won't move...

Same problem in my 88 allegro sounds like fluid is low.Fill with Dextron II it should help as long as it is hooked up and you can hear it.

Where can I find a parts list including pictures for a 2002 j72 auto park brake system. The previous owner tried to fix the system and lost some of the parts. Thank you
Jerry
Re: AUTO PARK BRAKE rich. 5-11-09
The pump releases the brake---loss of power or Park---Deenergises the pump--and the spring lets the cable go---and the brake applies to the drum,
if you here NOTHING---it's been by passed--(very dangerous)

Hi Rick;
sounds like someone has disabled the Auto-Park System. the pump system pulls off the spring loaded auto park cable, which releases the shoes from the brake drum on the rear of the transmission,If the shoes are worn out---the brake will NOT hold---but it sounds like it is disabled,to me
1.do you hear the pump running.?when putting it in park?
2.do you ever get a red light on the dash.?
it is designed to lock up drum Brake if power is lost or in park,

Re: AUTO PARK BRAKE rich. 5-11-09
Very possible that there is a pressure switch that might be bad---and that's why the cable was disconnected--
1. do you see the tank in the auto park? be sure it's full of (Dextron) fluid if the tank has drained out---2.The Green switch GM part # 15961566 has probably gone bad, and that's why it was disabled since no one knew how to fix it-

Re: AUTO PARK BRAKE Michael 9-8-09
I have a '96 Bounder and the Auto Park light came on while driving during a trip a few days ago while on the road. Completed the trip (another 150 miles) with no problem. The RV started but would roll when in Park on a slight grade (but did that before). My RV repair shop said it was a drive train issue that they do not work on. Any suggestions?
Re: AUTO PARK BRAKE gail 7-3-14
Hi. Have a 1998 winnebago itasca. 32000 miles. Auto park not releasing when put in drive. Can hear pump run. Seems to be when motorhome is hot from running. Last time took couple minutes for it to finally release completely. Ideas?
Re: AUTO PARK BRAKE Rick 5-11-09
I don't here the pump. A red light stays on it says auto brake. ( The person I brought the RV from said I did not have to do anything about the parking light on. When, I engage the APB switch a light shows up on the dash also.
Re: AUTO PARK BRAKE Rick 5-11-09
One last question and thanks for your help. Can this be fix just reconnecting the Auto cable to the transmission or am I looking at a major repair job.
Re: AUTO PARK BRAKE Rick 5-12-09
Thanks for your time. The RV runs fine and all gears forward and reverse. It just want hold when in park. It will roll on a small incline when in park. (forward or backward)
Re: AUTO PARK BRAKE Ken 7-14-09
Hi, Rick,

Did you ever get resolution to your problem? I have the same problem with my '95 Bounder as you described. My coach will not hold in Park. The AutoPark light does not stay on after starting the coach. I had the parking brake cable replaced however, I continue to have same problem. Any input is appreciated.

Ken

Re: AUTO PARK BRAKE Patrick 3-2-10
Neil,
There are two ways to adjust the AutoPark Brakes. The first is to tighten the cable at the hydraulic end. To do this SECURELY CHOCK the RV. Turn the key to the "ON" postion but do not start the motor. Place the shift lever in any gear but park. Go under the RV loosen the jam nut and move it out by about 1/4", Tighten the cable to contact the jam nut the tighten the jam nut. Check to see if the brakes engage and release properly. Readjust as needed.

The other way is to spread the shoes using the jack screw. The jack screw is located at about 11:30 on the drum on the back of the tranny. SECURELY CHOCK the RV and raise the rear wheels so that you can rotate the driveshaft. Turn the key to the "ON" position and shift out of PARK. Go under the RV. Remove the dust cover from the adjustment slot on the drum and rotate the shaft so that slot is at about 11:30. Use a flashlight to look into the drum to accurately locate the Thumbwheel. Use a flatblade screwdriver to rotate the thumbwheel. I don't recall which way spreads or narrows. Pick a direction and rotate 1-2 turns then test.
