I have a 1991 Chevy P30 chassis with a short BlueBird bus body powered by a 6.2 diesel with a 4L80E transmission. It shifts ok with a little softness from 3rd to 4th and the lockout is hard to feel it is happening.
I've been convinced by the transmission shop in my town Santa Maria, CA [the one everybody reccomends] that it needs to be overhauled; estimated price $3,000 with a 12 month guarantee.
Unfortunately that is a bit out of my affordable cost range. Apparently stuff is a lot more expensive in California 93458 then in other places as I have located a place in AZ Phoenix Remanufactured Transmissions that will do it for $1425.
My question; is the local guy priced rate for the area and does it make sense to drive 560 miles 1 way to save $1500?
If you break down, getting there it might be even more costly
call and make sure what the more reasonable guy is doing in his overhaul compaired to the higher priced -shop.

I've found those "great" deals and 12 month guarantees. My experience, that tranny will be good for 13 to 18 months, and you'll be looking for another tranny shop.
I'd look at new from Chevrolet. You'd be surprised, the cost isn't that much more, and a 3 year 75,000 mile warranty. Or Jasper offers a 3 year 75,000 remanufactured. I've had one of theirs in my Corvette, for 4 years and 48,000 without a moments problem.
