Even though my 1998 Tahoe operators manual says I can tow a Trailer/Camper in Over Drive, should I not do that? My mechanic says since I have, I have more then likely runied the tranny.
The first tranny went out in 2006. Now this replacement tranny is acting up the same way.
I've towed my 2002 Toyota Tacoma pickup behind my motorhome for many thousands of miles without any problems. I put the transfer case in neutral, the automatic transmission in park, and turn the ignition switch to accessory so that the steering wheel remains unlocked. I realize that the manual says you shouldn't tow it (4 wheels on the ground), but I couldn't see any technical reason not to do so.
I slso paid an onlne mechanical expert about my practice, and he said there shouldn't be any problems. He said the transfer case gears will get plenty of oil. He also said Toyota probably discourages towing it because o "liability" issues.
