I have just installed a transmission guage in my newly aquired (used) 1996 33' Gulfstream Sunsport w/460cid and a 4 sp automatic Ford Transmission.
Experimenting I have found that at 55mph (90kph) the temperature stays at 175F. At 62mph (100kph) the temperature stays at 190F and at 70mph (110kph) the temperature stays at 200F. All the above is on a straight away with no hills / headwind.
We are heading out west next month and will be going through the rockies. I would like to know what the correct operating temperature should be and at what temperature should I pull over to let the fluid cool??
I went through two transmissions in my former MH (1984 Coachmen) with no temperature guage!
Also I'm thinking of installing a cooling fan infront of the transmission cooler - any comments?
Ok, I under stand about a transmission overheating, but what about it being too cool?
We just took a 1,700 mile trip in our newly acquired '04 Airstream Bus with a C7 Cat and Allison 3000 6 speed. The temp gauge read in the almost cold range the whole trip, so we manually checked the fluid. The fluid was cool enough you could put your hand into it! Is this good or bad? If bad, what would cause it and how do you correct it. No coverage on the chassis or would take to Freightliner service department (long story).
I suggest that you install a auxiliary cooler and a big one + the fan if budget allow. The fan will also help the dash AC. I am not sure about the max temp but I would start to worry when it reache 225 F. Here a place where you can ask:

We checked the fluid manually and you could have put your hand right in the fluid. Is this a good thing or bad? If bad, what could be causing this and how do you correct it? We would have it checked by the Freightliner service, but has no coverage on the chassis (long story).
Would like to know what the transmission temperature should be for my 1997 4x4 Dodge Pickup. I have added a Temp Gauge but would like to know what the temp should be under normal conditions.
