It needs body work and a new gas tank. It has a Dodge slant or straight six that runs good with a 4 speed man.And it has frontwheel drive and i also have the schematics for it. thanks
Hi,
I have a Cortez for sale. 1967 19' style HC, slant 6 engine-225 cu inches. Grandpa was working on it before he passed away. Some work needed and some things left undone. We live in Portland. If anyone is SERIOUSLY interested, please contact me. You can email or call: 503-761-2882.
Was wondering what your research bore out on this subject. I just purchased a 74 Cortez with a olds tornado engine in it and have been wondering if it could be changed over to a diesel engine to run off either bio diesel or svo. Another option that I had been wondering about was possibilities of propane and the conversion of using the propane to fuel the motor home if it was not conducive and cost efficient to convert the motor home to a diesel.
I would think a Cummins 4BT or 6BT would match up just fine in place of the old slant 6.
But with the Olds Toronado engine and transaxle I think you are pretty much SOL. I think the only other engine that might mate up would be the Caddy 500 CI. On the offchance, you might look at the 6.2/6.5L GM diesel for size. It would be the only other engine I can think of that might match up to the Toronado FWD transaxle.
I have a 1973 Revcon 26' motorhome with the olds 455 Tornado front drive. I just found online an adapter that mates a Cummins 6bt/4bt to a GM/BOP automatic bellhousing, so it looks like there may be hope for a diesel in your motorhome!
I know Cortez came with a 302 Ford V8 a few years ? before the Olds. Can anyone tell me if the used an adapter on the bell housing, or was it a different trans ? Anyone got one for sale ?
Thanks

I own a 65 cortez, i like the idea of a cummins diesel bolting up to the four speed, is this just theory or can this really work. is the engine you refered to the same as in the dodge pickup. thanks Jeff
We had an early 6 cylinder Clark Cortez motorhome and replaced the engine with a Chrysler 440 engine. We of course kept the original 4 speed front trans axle drive. We had problems with the transmission and a few other things it seemed like on every trip but boy did we get the looks when pulling a boat and flying up the hills. I remember my dad welding a special bracket on the transmission housing to align the engine and trans axle properly.

HISTORY: The "Cortez" was designed in the late 'fifties' as a mobile office however, the maker believed there was a vast market for a 'recreational home on wheels' and produced this very early motorhome in the USA commencing in 1963..and losing money on every unit made due to the high cost quality materials used to manufacture it. The Cortez cost as much as a small new house and as a result was only bought by wealthy people in California and Arizona. It won many awards for its design and efficiency and road handling
