I have two marine 6v53 naturals I would like to know if they are dependable engines i also would like to know what i can do to them to get more horsepower out of them and how much more horsepower will i get. Could i put bigger blowers on them or can i turbo charge them
Hello, how much would a pair of marine 6v53's weigh? I am repowering my 33' cruiser and it has 318's in it now. I am wondering if the 6v53's would be a good replacement, weight,power and economy wise... thanks Jim
A 6V-53 is like any other 2-cycle DD--you can do just about anything to them. You can put a turbo on it, you can put larger injectors in it, you can reset the rack, in short, if you can do it to a -71 or a -92, you can do it to a -53. The one thing you cannot do to it is lug it.
The -53 series had one really bad trait that it doesn't have in common with the -71 and -92 series. The -53 series has a redline of 2750 RPM instead of 2150 RPM. It really gives definition to the term "Screaming Jimmy".
The most common HP setting of a 6V-53 was usually in the 205-220 HP range.
The most common problem to all of the 2-cycle DD's, particularly the high HP versions, was excess heat. While it rarely was a problem with keel cooled marine versions, getting enough radiator and air through the radiator in a rear engine bus can be a real problem.
I also have a 6v53 in an RV... Above you said "You can reset the rack" in reference to more power from a 6v53. Please provide a little detail as my normally aspirated is a little weak.
