Hello, I am considering buying a 1979 MCI bus for conversion. It is a 47 pass. Any pros/cons on this make of bus. Are parts available if needed? It has 30K miles on factory rebuilt motor.

I just bought a 1979 mci 9looking to convert it. hoping to find other doing the same. i want to install a rebuilt engine where is a good place to look for that. it has a 8v71n in it now and i would like to install a turbo engine. anyone have input.
What is the difference between the 5's.
I'm looking at a 1978 5c and I'm trying to put a $ anount on it. I see the prices are all over the place. This bus in in good shape with low miles. Used mostly on a military base since new.
I have a 1974 MCI 5B and I have no trouble getting parts for it.
Ps if you buy it, get a parts and repair book from MCI. They are well worth the price. It is very detailed and will allow you to repair everything by your self
Mechanically, the MC-5,7,9,and 12 were mechanically identical. Upgrades over the years included larger radiators, larger engines with more HP, electronic controls on the engine and transmission, and exterior upgrades which included larger windshields.
If you look at some of the buses still in Greyhound's fleet you will see even the dashboards didn't change significantly over the years.
The point is, most all of the bugs were worked out of the buses a long time ago. Parts and pieces are still readily available directly from MCI.
With the glut of used buses on the market, you should be able to find a very good bus for a reasonable price.
Hi Gypsybone, I'm from Australia and we have abour 52 surviving out of 55 imported to Aus.Many 7 series are still at work and they look real good I have a MCI 8 for the past 13 years and do enormous distance on rough outback traks ie Perth to Ayre's Rock near Alice Springs. It's on the original motor bored to.30 recently and it fly's. I Recomend you get a 7 or 8 series as they have more stainless framing than the 9 but I just saw a good looking 9 at the MCI site tonight for $10,000, if it goes Ok buy that, I prefer the 871 GM to the 692T for sheer relibility anything with a Tubo is trouble especially if you blow a fuel hose which I have done in a Kenworth some years ago, near burnt the thing to the ground. the 692T didn't hack it in Trucking but the 871 did the 8v92TA was a good one though, as a warning change the air filters regular as they can "dust up" your motor real quick. You get the drift I'm sure.Cheers
I have recently looked at an MCI5c 1978
with low milege. Under 50k. Does anyone
know what the value may be. It runs good but the a/c is not working. It has
been converted to the newer freon. The body is straight and has no big problems.
Dave, you asked the difference in MCI 5s. MCI 5/MCC-5 was made from 1963 to 1964. MCI 5/MCC-5A was made in 64 to 70. MC-5B was made 71 to 77. MCI MC_5C was made in 77 to 80. They were all 35' long and had a single rear axel. The MCI MC-6 was made in 69 and 70. They had a duel rear axel, were 40' long and had a pass. floor that was about 6" higher than the drivers floor. The MC-5C had a squared roof than the A or B and matched the MC-8. All were 96" wide. The MC-6 was 102" wide. Roger
