Does anyone have any leads on a school that teaches you how to drive a bus (not school bus). I have searched the net and can only find one which is located in California. Any help will be appreciated!
You'll need two kinds of initial driving experience: short spaces and long hauls. My advice for the first is to find a semi-abandoned grocery store parking lot and learn in short order what gear grinding and timing are all about. It shouldn't take you more than an hour and you'll have plenty of empty spaces with which to practice backing. Buy a cheap walkie-talkie headset at Radio Shack so your partner can help you when you can't see.
As for long hauls, just learn to do it. The experience you gained in that shopping center parking lot will at least let you get through the gears and you will have already learned that air brakes react differently than hydraulics. Point the thing in a straight line and drive responsibly. It's easier than you think. Just be mindful of school buses filled with crippled Catholic children that suddenly pull out in front of you and you will be fine. Also, never go down a hill in a gear greater than you went up it in. That REALLY pisses off the religious right, not to mention burning up your brake shoes. Have the bus thoroughly checked by a good bus mechanic before you attempt any of this.
