I was wondering if any of you knowledgable people out there know anything about the 6v-53 detroit diesel engine or have had any experience, good or bad, with the 53 series of detroits? any and all info would be appreciated.
thanks.
I HAVE BEEN BUILDING DETROIT DIESEL (ALL
FOR 50 YEARS THE 4-53 ENGINE IS IN THE PAST BUT THERE ARE STILL ALOT OUT THERE
CAN AT 3300 RPM HIGH END NOT RECOMMENDED
RIGHT NOW WE NEED A HEAD CAN BE CRACKED
CORE AND NOT SURFACED TOO MUCH TO REBUILD AND WELD UP THANKS WAYNE
The 53 series is a good engine for it's size and age. A bit low on power, and an old engine, so finding some accesories can be a challenge.
I don't think there are any DDEC units out there, so it would be a mechanical governor, which involves regular tune-ups.
What were you planning on putting this into? It would help to know what application you intend for it, because the engine might be overpowered by the intended load.
I experienced 3-53, 4-53 and 6V-53 engines, fitted on various pieces of equipment (Timberland hoists, Timberjack forestry tractors, winch trucks, power generators and dewatering pumps) often working under harsh (very harsh)conditions.
Great engines, great ratio weight/volume/power.
Comsuption in the range of many of their contemporary 4 stroke diesels, or just a bit over...
Also easy to service, parts available worlwide.
Mis-operated engines could fire back and counter-rotate !!...
Screaming Jimmy's have been source of hearing losses for regular users who didn't wear proper protection on open equipment.
Very easy to recognize, even in a noizy environment....
They were more consuming oil rather than leaking oil.
But, again, great lovely engines.
While there is nothing inherently wrong with the 53 series detroit diesel engines, they don't belong in a bus of any size because they are too small.
The largest 53 series engine made that I am aware of was the 6V53, which is 318 cubic inches, or a little over 6 litres. Such a diesel is much too small to provide enough torque and power to move a bus of any size.
I've driven a Brigadeer truck with a 6V53 in it and a 5 and 4 transmission. Even when not loaded the truck was underpowered and took a lot of shifting to keep that engine in the "power" band.
A diesel mechanic by trade and licence here in Canada I was born and raised on 2-stroke Detroits including the 53 series Detroits. I have put 4-43T,s in dodge trucks and motorhomes. Any questions you have I will try to answear to the best of my knowledge. Thanks Dieseldog!!
Got a Detroit Diesel inline 53 - I think.
Model 50375043
Trying to run the cooling system - converting it from bread truck to marine.
I'm no mechanic - can get one - need manual or something to help guide and develop hoses.
The -53 series engines were and continue to be pretty good engines. Like all 2-cycle DD's, they are dependable and long lived if you treat them right.
They do not take lugging well at all and need to be warm to operate at their best.
The 6V-53 is a good medium duty engine but do not expect a lot of HP out of one. 200 HP is about the most you can expect out of a non-turbo version. The 6V-53 is similar in power and torque to an early Cat 3208.
The real downside to a DD -53 series is in order to get the most out of them they need to be run up against the governor. On the -53's it means running them at 2600-2750 RPM. When you run a 2-cycle DD that fast and hard you will understand the true meaning behind their nickname of screaming jimmy.
Like all 2-cycle DD's, the -53 series leak oil and there isn't a whole lot you can do to stop it completely. There are just too many knotholes to stop up.
If you are going to be repowering something with a 6V-53, if the completed vehcile weighs in at less than 20K lbs it should be a pretty good combination. If it weighs in at more than 20K you are going to be stretching it a little. Also, putting an Allison behind it will make your lack of power that much worse.
Due in large part to the narrow power band, a multi-range Road Ranger transmission would be a good choice for a transmission. With enough gears you can keep the RPM's up at the top where DD 2-cycles like to live.
Have been running a 6V53 in a 1952 32ft Fageol twin Coach for 16 years now. Think it is a great little motor. Not much on bottom end but it pulls good on top. Recently did a mod where we cut out the valves seats and put in 71 series valves. Had to remove a little material from the injectors to clear valve springs. Went from N45 injectors to 70mm brown tags. Had to add more cooling capacity to deal with all the new horse power. Upped the rear end gears from 5.56 to 4.88. We pull a fully loaded race trailer and are very happy with the performance. Can't beat the horse power to weight ratio. MPG runs 10-12.
When my dad was a kid, him and a good friend took an old 197* Ford F-350 truck, took out the engine, and put a Detroit Diesel 453 Inline 6. It is a neat truck for myself to drive as a fuel truck and i agree with Mark O., that i have heard of the name screaming jimmy, and agree why they call it that.
I also have a tandem chevrolet brigadier series 70 grain truck with a 6V53 Detroit diesel in it. It has a 5 and 3 transmission, the engine is a good engine to drive with, but lacks the power when the truck is full of grain. A week ago, there was a problem when starting the engine, it would take a little too long before she started to bark. We phoned a mechanic, and he sugested a 10,000.00$ CDN rebuild. That day, while fiddling around with it, we found out it was the valve for the intake was taking too long to open up, therfore delaying the start.
Thoughout my little experience with detroit engines, i concluded that a series 53 Detroit Engine is an experience, hence i am only 17 years old!
I have a customer that had a 4-53 rebult I was asked to hook it up after it was set into the clark loader.. It is not able to be turned over it seems to be seized? any input?? before I yank it back out??? Thanks Drew
I am in the process of O/H a 453. I have the service manual and wanted to find out if anyone here might be able to provide some info regarding specialty tools to complete the O/H?

We are in the process of cleaning out our pond, so we bought a dump truck and rented a drott 50d trackhoe, well every thing went great until the 6v 53 engine, in the trackhoe started smoking, we removed the head and it had 3 valve heads missing, but not much more damage, any ideas why this would happen?
On a 453 Detroit the engine oil cooler is on the right side of the engine with the water pump bolted on top of it, I was wondering if it mattered what way the cooler itself went in the housing. It has 2 holes one for in and one for out but they both look the same.
Now let me introduce my products, our main products is super glue, and it is no problem to send products via DHL/UPS/fedEx or air-cargo, the only problem is the payment should be prepaid before production.
