My Onan Marquis Gold 5500 Series Gasoline generator starts then dies in 3 or 4 seconds. Holding in the start button does not keep it running. It has plenty of Gasoline and oil. How do I trouble shoot it? any suggestions.

BV Fire Dept gave you good advice. My Onan had the same problem and it turned out to be the fuel pump.
I don't know your level of experience, but just in case you haven't had a lot, check the fuel pump output by disconnecting the fuel line at the carb, turn over the gen and see if you've got spurts. If it is the fuel pump, you can usually find identical generic replacements at an auto parts store.
