My Onan Marquis Gold 5500 Series Gasoline generator starts then dies in 3 or 4 seconds. Holding in the start button does not keep it running. It has plenty of Gasoline and oil. How do I trouble shoot it? any suggestions.

BV Fire Dept gave you good advice. My Onan had the same problem and it turned out to be the fuel pump.
I don't know your level of experience, but just in case you haven't had a lot, check the fuel pump output by disconnecting the fuel line at the carb, turn over the gen and see if you've got spurts. If it is the fuel pump, you can usually find identical generic replacements at an auto parts store.
Brad, Just how long has it been sitting? It's possible that the gas has gone bad, and if so, you will need to purge some of it from the hose going into the generator. Mine did the same, and first we changed out the inlet air filter, new plugs, gas filter, and a fresh oil and filter change. After purging around a gal from the line, "It wouldn't even burn when we poured a little on the ground and tried lighting it" and used carb cleaner on the carb as well as blowing compressed air through the inlet to the carb jets, it fired and stayed running. Gas doesn't take long to go bad, and usually you can tell from the smell of the exhaust when you try and fire it. Adding some gas treatment to the main gas tank will help a little if your rig is going to be sitting for any length of time. Doesn't take much to do the job. If your stubborn and keep trying to fire it without doing the purging of at least the inlet gas line, you'll end up burning up the starter, so it's best to purge before having to replace anything on the Generator, as it's pricey. Good Luck!!!
