Wheels are locked up Kilroy 2-20-08
My brother has a 1972 Winnebago "Brave" 22 foot motorhome. It has been sitting for 1 1/2 years. The wheel cylinders were leaking when he parked it.I cranked it up and went to move it and the wheels or brakes are locked up.I tried reverse, forward and something popped under it and it moved a little but it's like the wheels are locked up and won't turn.Any ideas on how to fix this or has anyone else had this problem? Also It has split rims and is it safe to pull the wheel off like a truck to check the brake drums.Any help would be appreciated.....

I cannot tell you for sure but my Honda Goldwing motorcycle did this and the calipier was rusted and then froze to lock the brake (and subsequently the wheel). I hope this info helps.

It is comon for brake Linings Soaked in brake or diff oil to swell. Then it gets interesting to get things apart. If the are leaking brake fluid the cycinders will also atract moisture and rust solid. I have used a cutting torch to get backing plates off or to dissasemble calipers that get like this. I wasn't heating, I was cutting up the component. I would find rebuildable replacements at a wreking yard before firing the torch up. Split rims should not be reused in my opinion. If you brought your unit to my shop I would require them to be inspected by a specialist before re installing them. If I am at all unsure how safe they are I let the air pressure out after suporting the unit and before doing any work on that wheel end assembly. People have died when these wheels fail, usualy durring the pressure up phase. Good Luck
