I have a 88 BII 4x4 a4ld it is just fine when cold shifts in all gears. But when it warms up it slips in revrese and 3rd and will not go in OD. Unhooked the 3 wire con,it worked in 3 gears untill warm, slipped in rev. and 3rd changed filter, checked fluid,no leaks, changed the oil cooler, blowed out lines, no change. The longer you drive it,it will stop moving. Then when it cools its fine untill it gets warm again. It does make a humming noise when warm.
This could be the bands slipping or it could be the clutch packs slipping or a combination of both. Adjusting the bands is a cheap thing to try, but if the clutch packs are the problem the fix will require a rebuild.
First thing to do is check the trans fluid level when thet trans is hot to make sure it's at the right level.
To adjust the bands: when the transmission is **STONE COLD**, loosen the jamb nut (hex shaped) and then tighten down on the adjuster (square shaped). Tighten until it firmly bottoms DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN!!! this isn't a bolt that holds something, it's an adjuster so you don't need to crank down on it. Back off the adjustment 1/4 turn or 90 degrees. Holding the adjuster in place, tighten down the jamb nut.
The A4LD has 2 bands and both need to be adjusted. If this doesn't fix the problem completely, you're looking at a rebuild.
This helped a little, if I let it shift slowly into 3rd and excelerate slowly to, but it did help. Reverse is still bad but it surges and moves alittle better. Surges in 3rd to if I press to hard on the excelerater. Thanks
