My starter grinds when I start the engine. I have tried to shim it, grind the starter plate a little but still grinds. If I move it a little the starter will not engage the flexplate to far the other way and grind away. What should I do. The motor still retains the original flexplate and this is the starter one that came with the truck when I bought it 3 yrs ago. I took the starter out and engaged it on the ground and it worked fine. So what is my next step.
From what you're describing, it sounds like the bendix is shot on your starter. The next step is to see if you can find witness marks on the starter gear or flexplate that shows where the starter is grinding. If you find shiny spots on the visible face of the starter gear or on the side of the flexplate closest to the engine block, then the grinding is from the bendix not pushing the starter gear out far enough.
The Bendix is made to be rebuilt, so you might just fix the problem by disassembling and cleaning it or you could just plunk down the money for a reman starter.
I have the same truck with a 2.9 ltr. eng and am having the same problem. i purchased a rebuilt stater but this one does the same thing. any solutions.
