98 Ranger 4x4 Rick 2-4-08
I have a 98 ranger. This last year i purchesed the ranger and put some work into including replacing one of the lock outs. After replacing the lock out and front drive shaft the 4x4 was working good. Now it does not like to engage again. Im wondering if there is anything out there i can do to get away from the vacuum lockouts that ford put in the ranger for 98-99 then changed again. If you have any sugestions I would be more then happy to hear them. I dont have alot of money but am interested in knowing what i can do to try to fix the problem. I have looked at the lockouts and they seem to be intact. Im not sure why the 4x4 does not engage all the time. If i play with the switch for awhile i can get it to engage but I would like to get it to engage everytime i swich into 4x4. Thanks for your time and information on this matter.

On the face of it, it really sounds like you have an electrical problem not a problem with the locking mechanism.

The front axle design for the vacuum locks uses moving spider gear inside the front differential to lock and unlock the front axle. There is no provision to mount or use locking hubs that I know of.

There are 2 choices I can offer; Use a differential from an older axle and have the front axle locked at all times or use an aftermarket air or electric locker for the front differential.

Personally, I'd start by investing in an EVTM from helminc.com and troubleshooting what sounds like an electrical problem. Even if that doesn't fix the problem, it's money well spent.

Hope that helps!

I have looked at the web site and there are not ETM's for my truck. I do agree the problem may be electrical and this weekend im gonna be testing some of that to see if i cant track down the problem. I do thank the infomation and I do wish they would have had it cause I agree it would be nice to have. Electrical is the one type of auto work I have very little time in. Again thanks Phil Feinstein.
