I did some research and found out that the bore centerline, deck height and main and rod bearing sizes are the same as the 4.0L. Will a complete 4.0L bottom end fit in a 2.9L block? All the data points that it will? Your comments please.
I've never tried this, so I don't know for sure. At first blush, the answer would be "No", since the stroke is longer in the 4L motor and the bore is larger than in the 2.9L. Ford doesn't build "Oversquare" (bore greater than stroke), they tend to build "Square"(bore = stroke) or "Undersquare" (bore less than stroke) motors. Of course, this could just mean that the block needs to be clearanced like you were building a stroker motor.
