87 gulfstream 454 engine new altinator and battery, when the rv is running the battery is draing and then dead, i ran a idoit light /bad/fair/good/first bad and then after10 miutes it was overcharging and then normal and then ded again help!!!
I was thinking it was a external regulator but the new altinator has a internal one would the soilinoids do this or the battery isolators or is there some sort of hidden regulator???
I would think that if it was the isolator or solinoids they would be HOT to the touch in a short time. Mine is a 1988 Chinock on a Ford frame. With the ignition off, the truck battery is isolated from the house batteries. With ignition on, all four batteries come on line. Is there some way that your house batteries are not conected in parallel with the truck battery with ignition on? The isolator is most likely connected to a 20 amp fuze. High resistance may not blow the fuze while a dead short will blow it right away. I would make sure all my negitve batery posts are in line. If so, maybe the new altinator is the suspect.
The first thing I would suspect is bad connections or damaged wires. A ne walternator should act like that, but it might if the battery is heavily sulphated and won't take a charge.
With no load, you should see at least 13.5 volts across the battery terminals with the engine running at idle. With the headlights and heater and other electrical loads, you should have a minimum of 12.5 volts at idle.
I have 3 12v batterys 1 to the engine 2 to the house, i think my battery isoltor is bad,and how do i check to see if the 2 silonoids r bad???thanks for your help
At the alt there should be two wires, a small one and a heavy guage one. The small one is only hot when the key is in the "run" position, and should show battery voltage. The heavy wire is the alt output and should go to the isolator connection marked Alt or such. Of the other 2 connections, one will go to the "+" terminal of the chassis battery, the other will go to the "+" terminal of one of the 2 house batteries( do you have 2 12 volt batteries wired in parallel or 2 6 volt ones wired in series?
I also took the altinator back to the shop for a test and it was charging fine, thinking of running the altinator just to the engine battery getting rid of the isolators and silanoids and go high power solar, for the 2 house batterys has anyone done this????
Just bought it and the volt meter on the dash was a little crazy it would charge and then not,got home and the battery was dead, on the way home the fridge diplay on the fridge would come on and go off,so i replaced the engine battery and altinator, there is a wire on the battery issolator which goes to the house batterys, it comes from the isolator box to the small silver bx and then to the house batterys its rusted so i cleaned it,i think it was shorting the isolator out because when i cleaned it up the fridge came back on but could it be possble the isolator is bd now because the fridge is running off the engine battery the house battery r dissconnected and the altinator is only charging at 12v with nothing on.....
