Onan Emerald dies when switch is released Jonathan 12-30-07
My generator will run with the switch held on start but dies when I release the switch. It seems that I am getting 58 HTZ but only 60 volts when I check an outlet with the button held in. Any thing I should check first? The oil pressure switch was replaced. I am stumped.

Hi,i had the same problem,it would run with the start switch held on but when released engine dies. Pull out brush pack for 12volt circect and clean ban that brushes run on with a paint stick and some sandpaper as you spin the engine over with the starter. The moter should run after you release the start switch produceing 12volts on its own. I hope this helps, call me if any questions. 352-799-7242 evenings 8pm-----12 midnight. David.

Jonathan, My emerald 3 did the same thing,It's the circuit board behind
the start switch on the gen, set.this
is quite common and the board cost
about 400.00 dollers.I had to come
up with something better after it did
this twice to me.I wired a key switch
just inside the rv door, the switch turns on the power 12 volt to the gen.
coil and the fuel pump.I went to the
Onan dealer and got the right 12 volt
resister to put inline to the coil so
the points would not burn up with the full 12 volts. Now i turn the key switch
on and go to the dash inside the rv to
start it up.WORKS GREAT! When it's time
to shut down i use the key switch on my way out. You must use the front dash
switch to start because it will excite
the Gen.set to make 110 power. This has worked without fail for the past
4 years. Its a bit of work to wire but
well worth it in the end. The board is
only there to give 12 volt to the gen.set after it senses 110 volts. Silly, but thats the way it works.
Have a great day, hope this helps!

Voltage Regulator is most likely the bad component.

Hey Richard, thanks for the tip, I did replace the board and it did not correct the problem. You were not the only one to suggest that though. My next part is the voltage regulator as someone else has suggested. I appreciate your taking the time.
