88 ranger. turn the key and the starter grinds the flywheel.. need help asap steve 12-28-07
I got this truck from this guy
he said he put a new flywheel and clutch in it

he said it needed a bat and a axle

got it all together bolted everything up

now i turn the key and the starter will turn the motor over just
it sounds like it's grinding
and sum time it just grinds the flywheel

i bought a new starter and it still does the same thing

could this bee that he got the wroge flywheel

could the backin plate be bent and holden the starter away from the fly wheel

should i just cut the backin plate away around the starter

i don't kno what this could be

thanks for any help
i kinda need to get this truck running by next week

get back to me asap

In general starters that grind are either interfering on something or the starter and flywheel are miss matched. The flywheel being worn or incorrect is the first suspect. To check it you pull the starter and or inspection cover and roll the engine over by hand looking for damaged teeth. The starter drive teeth should show wear andf damge if this is the case. I have miss-installed the sheet metal cover so it rubs more than once. The first thing is to see if it spinning the motor, if not figure out the starter/flywheel miss-match. I would check anything the other guy did very closely. Good Luck
