I have a 4wd automatic 88 ford ranger and was wondering if anyone figured out what can fix all the rough running? or any tips to help it run alot better i already got a new 02 sensor and was wondering if maybe i should get a new cat converter? please any suggestions would help alot thanks!
When was your last tune up? How old are the sparkplug wires? Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Does the temp gauge needle register between the "R" and the "M" when the truck is warmed up? Have you checked the fuel pressure regulator?
Thanks alot! ill try all that it just passed smog so i assumed it wasnt the plugs also when i switch gears like from park to reverse or from drive to reverse it jerks real hard and im not sure what it is any idea?
Typically when the there's a hard "jerk" when shifting from park to reverse or reverse to drive it means the idle is too high. With a truck or van or anything with rear wheel drive it can also mean the u-joints have worn and have become sloppy. if it's the U-joints, the jerk is usually accompanied by a thudding or clanking or banging noise (depending on how far gone the joints are).
You can dignose bad u-joints by putting the rear wheels in the air and getting under the truck and shakeing the driveshaft. There should be no wobble side to side or up and down. If the driveshaft wobbles or moves when you try to shake it, then the u-joint for that section is bad. The 4WD ranger also has a support bearing, which can fail and cause the driveshaft to bang around, but if that bearing failed it wouold be noisey and vibrate a lot when you drove.
There is no sound followed by the jerk i thought it was the transmission but i took it to my transmission guy and he said it wasnt maybe it is the idle thanks ill be sure to check that out thanks alot
