1998 Ford Escort LX 2.0L. James 12-14-07  
My ford has a rough idle. no codes, check engine light is not on, all four cylinders has good compression, ignition is fine, there are no vacuum leaks,but yet still has a very rough idle, especially when the A.C. is on. Has a 130 thousand miles other then that the car runs great.

My car would sometimes act like its misfiring, then the engine just died, then when i got it to start, it would make this horrific knocking.

at idle, changed the #1 injector but still misses, runs great otherwise.

After all the checks you've done, the next thing I'd suspect would be the fuel pressure regulator. Pull the vacuum hose off and if it's wet with gas, then it's bad and needs to be replaced.

The Escort is multi-point fuel injection, but doesn't always use a mass airflow sensor (MAF), it uses a manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAP). If your car has a MAP sensor, check the vacuum hose, especially if the MAP sensor is mounted on the firewall. The engine will flex back and forth a small amount and after a few years this will cause the hose to crack slightly. It won't set a code until it loses signal completely, but the car will run rough.

The '93 to '94 Taurus had the same type of issue, but the cause was the plug at the MAF sensor. I haven't heard if there has been a similar incident with the Escorts.

Finally, there is a resnonance chamber in the fuel tank between the fuel pick up and the fuel pump. it is notorious for leaking, will cause a rough idle and will not set a code. Replace it with a short length of fuel injection rated rubber hose and you will fix the leak. Since the leak is BEFORE the pump, you can't see it using a fuel pressure leakdown test!

It is not exhaust related, there is less than 3 psi back pressure, and all mounts are good. There is a common problem with this particular model and have as yet to figure out the problem and it's almost as if is a common computer problem. This is the 4th car identical to this, Heck one of them was even the same color.

I am going to guess as I haven't done one of these but other vehicals that run correct with vibration problems I have found: Exhast jammed against body. Bad/colapsed/torn/hard as rock engine mounts. Links to hold the top of the engine to cowl broken/missing/bent. Ind my favorite of all time a boulder jamed between the block and frame. If it runs correct the mounts would be the first thing I would inspect. Good Luck

Okay so I just bought this car and it has 205,800 miles on the axles, but the motor was replaced 3yrs ago. Anyway I put new serpentine belt on the car plugs, wires, oil change, air & oil filter, radiator flush...basically a tune up okay, well it ran fine for 2 days and not it takes at least 10 sec to start or always starts on the 2nd or 3rd try the engine light came on and I had it checked it said bank 1 and bank 2 and something about the car is running lean. It has a super rough idle now and this morning it stalled every time I came to a stop.. what can I do? I'm sick of paying ppl to tell me what's wrong and not doing anything about it... can someone plz help me? I'm a student and a single mother I dnt have the time or money to keep spending.

I have a 97 escort,it seems to idle badly when at a red light.i changed plug wires,vacuum hoses,fuel pump and filter.if you have any ideas what i can do.please tell me.thanks

I have a escort that idles badly when i'm driving about 40 mpr the car lurches.when the car first starts it seems fine when it warms up the problems start I show no codes.I've replaced most of the vacuum hoses,the egr valve, cleaned out the egr port,replaced the dpfe sensor to no change
where do I go next I'm lost on what to do

My 1998 Ford Escort has been idling rough for months and the "check engine" light came on a few days ago. My husband change spark pluds etc. It's still idling rough but runs very well other wise. What do we do to fix this problem? HELP!!

No fuel to cylinders, there is spark, changed regulator fuel filter and fuel pump. There is pressure to schrader valve and when i remove regulator under pressure there is fuel to that point. Whats next, cant afford to buy much more

I have a 1998 ford escort lx drove it yuesterday. went to start it and it wont start. we can get it to start with the gas peddle to the floor the we let off the gas and it dies it will not idle the motor is very rough sounding

Mines got the same idle problem ive searched and apperantly its a common problem among the 97, 98 ford escort models check your idle sensor befor the next time you start it if its twisted clockwise you need a new one and thats all it took for my to run brand new motha fuckaz

I have 1998 Ford Escort,rough Idle, weird noise Whilst driving, no pick up goes no more than 30 mph. I changed the Fuel filter, plugs & wires,air filter. Can any one help me get this resolved.

I have a 98 Escort and went everywhere to fix the rough idle. I changed plugs, wires, IAC, Fuel Filter, checked for vacuum leaks and cleaned MAF. NOTHING!!! It ran like it was ready to stall.....scary if I was at an intersection. Then, I cam across three possible problems that improved the idle to a point I feel like I driving in a newer car. DO THIS: 1) Replace the PCV hose and valve completely and make sure to use clamps to ensure the hose is held tightly. 2) Verify there are no leaks throughout the whole exhaust system. Mine did and it was a huge improvement once fixed. 3) Check the EGR by pulling the vacuum line while idling in park. If the engine stalls, it is fine. If there is no change in the idle, you need to replace it or (not recommended, but effective) cap off the vacuum line and the EGR vacuum inlet if it runs fine without being connected. Most likey the EGR diaphram is stuck in a position where it is not affecting the idle.

Your problem is almost certainly an EGR valve stuck open. Too much exhaust gas will cause your symptoms...dies at idle, runs lean and it will never set off a code for too much exhaust. It will only set off a code if there is insufficient EGR flow. Try replacing the EGR valve, or pull it off and suck on the vacuum port to see if it opens and closes. Cheap fix...hope the smog police aren't listening...pull off the vacuum hose and plug it with a drill bit or something equivalent and your problems should be over unless you have to get a smog test. Also, taking off the EGR valve on that car is a real pain...no room to get a wrench on exhaust tube.
