I have a push button four wheel drive that doesn't work at all any more. I had one incident where I couldn't get it to change out of 4 Low, and then it did. The next time I used the 4W it worked well. Recently I haven't been able to get it into 4W at all. When I try it clicks and slips. Next while in 2WH the front hubs have started making a humming sound that has increased over time. I'm afraid to drive it now for fear I will cause more damage. I cannot find a schematic to start to fix it. I've never worked on a 4W hub. Please help?
The hubs aren't that difficult to work on, you just need to be aware of a few things.
Once you take the wheel off, the outside part of the hub slides off the axle (if it doesn't slide off, check for 2 spring washers holding it in place). After the hub is off, you'll see a plastic ring. Slide that off and then remove the key from inside the keyway at the top (big square groove) and the nut that holds the assembley on the axle housing will come right off. The hum is probably a bad bearing, so you need to find which side has trouble and replace the inner and outer wheel bearings.
The 4WD on your truck is operated by an electric motor that is notorious for seizing. you really need to pick up a Chilton or Haynes book to diagnose it correctly, but I'm willing to bet that the motor on the back of the transfer case has failed. You can find the factory shop manuals for your truck at www.helminc.com.
