Duo-therm furnace noisy blower Bob Beatty 11-27-07
My Duo-therm furnace model 65930-046 works well, but the blower is very noisy. I would like to oil the motor or replace it if that doesn't work. Is a repair manual for this available? Can the motor be oiled without taking the whole furnace out?

Hi Bob

I have worked with alot of these type motors and you always have to take them out to oil them. The manufacturer will tell you to replace the motor, but they can be oiled. when you state,"making a noise" is it a squeak or a rattle? If it is a rattle then you might have a loose fan assy. If it is the squeaking noise, you can take the fan housing assy. out. This is done by removing the sheet metal screws at the bottom of the fan housing, unplug the wires to the motor and lift the assy. out. Some have only two screws on one side of the housing and a lip on the other side where part of the housing slides into.
After getting the assy out you can remove the motor from the fan by untighting the set screw on the fan and remove the motor mounting screw(generaly three). Once the motor is out you can use WD-40 and spray it on to the sealed bearing on the fan side of the motor and turn the shaft of the motor to work the oil into the bearing. At the other end of the motor it will be sealed and you can't use that method of oiling. So you take a small drill bit and drill a hole the size of a pencil lead in the center of the shaft location. Drill only deep enough to make the hole. Then take the oiling straw that came with the WD-40 and squirt the oil into the opening and work the oil into the bearing. After oiling, take a small amount of clear RTV and cover the opening to keep the dust out of the bearing area.
This has worked for me on alot of motors.
You can also get these motors from heating and Air conditioning supply houses. Take your old motor with you and they can match it up(HP,RPM and electrial rating) Hope this helps you out.
