I have a 1981 Ford Bronco Full size with a 351 windsor. It just started running weired. If i am going up a hill or getting into the gas it will die out but then it will start back up. most of the time if i am driving on flat surface and not getting into the pedal to much it will run ok...any suggestions?
This could be a few things. One thing that I think right away when you describe the problem is a broken baffle inside the muffler. If you puond on the muffler with a rubber mallet you'll hear a rattle or a noise that sounds like the there's something loose inside it.
Ford switched over to electric fuel pumps around this time because the mechanical ones would go bad too often. If you have a mechanical pump, check the sides of it for leaks. if you see any evidence of a leak, replace it. You'd be doing yourself a favor if you check the condition of the fuel lines as well as the charcoal canister while you're checking the pump.
Other than that, check the state of tune and give it a full tune up if you haven't done one in a while. Replace the plug wires if they're more than 4 years old.
