I'm looking at purchasing a 76 f250 4sp to tow my 4000# airstream.
the set up seems to be a 76 or 77, 4sp 2wd truck but I'm unsure of the engine size. I'm guessing 351, 390, 400 or worse...460? looks to be a camper special also (factory west coast mirrors, probably 4:10 rear)
wondering what the range of mpg might be while towing?
Hey, if you tow all downhill, your milage should be at least 25MPG with all the coasting ;-)
Seriously, though; It depends. With a carburated truck, your milage isn't so great to begin with. The manual trans helps a bit, but with a good state of tune and no load you will see about 10 to 15MPG. Hook up the trailer and I wouldn't be surprised if you saw milage in the 5 to 10MPG range.
I don't know your driving habits, I don't know what condition the engine or clutch is in and I don't know the tires and what condition they're in. These 4 things have the biggest impact on fuel economy.
You are right Phil, I towed with an '85 F 250 w/ C6 and carbed 460, and your MPG figures are right on. You gotta remember the old axiom, "Big horses eat a lot of hay".
