A/C Help !!!!!!! Tracy 8-31-07
I have a 1996 ford explorer. I had big truck toss a piece a steel through my front grill. But anyway all my freon leak out! So I replaced every thing and went to Napa and bought a freon recharger for a/c. The question??? When i refilled the a/c it will not get cold??? And it did not take that much. Out of and 18oz can it took about half or less. Thanks

HI TRACY, IF THE SYSTEM WAS OPEN TO OUTSIDE AIR, YOU NEED TO; REPLACE DAMAGED PARTS AND DRYER(DRYER CAPTURES MOISTURE AND KEEPS IT FROM FOULING THE OIL IN THE SYSTEM). CHECK THE OIL AMOUNT IN THE COMPRESSOR & ADD ANY YOU MAY HAVE LOST WHEN THE FREON WAS LOST(I ALWAYS REPLACE IT WITH NEW). ONCE THE SYSTEM IS RESEALED YOU NEED TO PUMP IT DOWN TO THE RECOMMENDED VACUUM AND ADD FREON(BEST TO USE FREON WITH DYE SO YOU CAN CHECK FOR LEAKS). DON'T OVERCHARGE THE SYSTEM. IT WON'T WORK RIGHT AND CAN BE DANGEROUS. MOST PEOPLE FIND IT A LOT EASIER TO GET A PRO TO DO THIS THEN TO RENT OR BORROW A VACUUM PUMP AND GAUGES. RICH

Did you evacuate the system first? If you didn't pull a vacuum, it will never charge properly.

Hi Tracy,First of all, more info is needed to properly answer to your situation. The amount of refrigerant you say you charged into your system is clearly not the required amount to cool properly. Your system may have debris in system in which case some of the system should be replaced,ie., orifice tube, suction accumulator. Then a good evacuation and then both high and low side guages installed to better evaluate the system condition as you recharge it. Sounds like a lot to do but if you want it right then better to do it once then to have to do it over and over. Hope this helps. Bruce, NV

When a piece of steel hit my condenser all the freon leaked out. Do I still need to evacuate the system???? I added EZ Chill R-134 to the vehicle till meter said full (45 psi) the air is still running hot?? HELP its going to be 103 degrees today...

Thanks bruce and joe i took your advice and took it to a automotive repair shop to have the system evacuated and many hours later I was told they could not recharge the system because of the dryer unit being faulty/or plugged????? Shouldn't they have known that when they were evacuating the system???? What should I do because two different shops gave me two different opinions???? Any advice please help....THANKS Tracy
