1996 FORD ESCORT RICK 8-9-07
I do not know what is going on with this car. I have lost power. I had been using midgrade gasoline but switched to the lower grade (when my boss decided to start paying for my gas) I replaced the spark plugs and wires, air filter, and fuel filter. In the morning times, it seems to drive along fine. However, when I come to a stop light and pull off, it struggles a little bit, then it takes off. Does anyone have any idea what this could mean?

Also, I put 2 quarts of oil in it this morning and smoke came out of the tail pipe for several miles.

2 things spring to mind immediately; A build up of Gunge in the throttle body can cause this and a fuel pump problem can cause this.

I say remove the throttle body and clean all the passages out with carb cleaner. Make sure the EGR isn't sticking open or blocked. If that doesn't fix the problem, pull the fuel pump out and remove the plastic resonance chamber between the fuel pump and the metal fuel line. replace it with fuel injection rated rubber fuel hose and 2 hose clamps and see if that fixes the problem. You should also check the fuel pressure regulator and see if it's leaking as well. If there's fuel in the vacuum line going to the fuel pressure regulator, then it's no good and needs to be replaced.

Hope that helps!

Sometimes these cars skip a timing belt tooth (or three) and loose their static engine timing without having a valve strike a piston. Near total engine power loss but the thing will still idle okay.

I have seen this twice.

Jery, either you don't have the belt timed correctly or you've bent a bunch of valves when the belt broke.

Hope that helps!
