The Onan Generator on my 1998 Pace Arrow 30 foot RV won't stay running. The fuel tank is full. Today I had the line from the unit to the fuel tank blown out with air, upstream of the Onan fuel pump. After initial resistance there was a "pop." When the air line was removed, fuel squirted out of the tank line. Hooked the line back up and the generator ran great for about ten minutes, then quit. During a recent panic stop the RV engine (Chevy-gasoline) stalled. After a few minutes, it restarted. Are there alternatives to the fuel tank being removed and cleaned? The RV fuel pump whines. I think removing the fuel tank is expensive. Thanks for any advice or comments.
I have about 50m miles on the RV and have changed the fuel filter twice for routine maintenance. Doesn't seem to be related to the problem. One mechanic suggested that with 9 year's age, there might be a small vacuum leak in the flex hose on the top of the tank. Thanks for your interest.
From the hundreds of blogs I've read, my problem seems common but have not really found an answer. My Onan GenSet 5000 Emerald Plus generator was working fine until last week then died. Took it an Onan dealer who said the starter solenoid, starter and start circuit board need to be replaced. I did all of that and it still does not work properly. It will start but will not stay running. It will continue to run as long as I hold the start button down. Don't want to burn out the new starter so I didn't try too many times. The fuel pump and coil are only "hot" when the start button is pushed. Any suggestions besides "buy another generator?" Thanks.
Sounds like a similiar problem I have...gen set will not run off the installed tank. I think it is a rusted hole in the internal tank siphon causing the gen set to suck air in the fuel line and lose prime.
New fuel hose on mine too.
Here is how I come to thins conclusion...I dis connected the fuel hose and stuck it in a 5gal can of gasoline, pumped the prime and fired it up...Will run from a can of gas, but not from the installed tank.
I am almost certain the tank will have to come out on mine for repairs, and I am dreding it.
On second thought, on mine...I may cut the fuel line to the generator and splice into the main tank fuel line with a ferrel "T" behind the tank solonoid switch for a fuel supply to the generator.
