I have a 1986 itasca Phasar with a 4 cylinder Renault gas engine, automatic front wheel drive. I was driving down the freeway at about 60mph when suddenly the engine revved up really high, almost as if it popped out of gear, and I lost all power to the wheels. I pulled over still in drive and could hear what sounded like metal clanking. Now when I put it in drive it it does nothing but the clanking and acts as though it's in neutral. I think it might be the linkage to the transmission but it's only a guess. Any suggestions as to what it could be? Thanks
I think you've lost one or more clutch packs inside the transmission. This is going to require a full tear-down and rebuild. The transmission cooler will need to be flushed out or a new external cooler installed.
Try to avoid running the engine; The more you hear that "Clanking" noise, the more damage you're doing inside the transmission.
