I just bought a 1988 ford ranger with the 2.9 V6 with the dual gas tank option. Everything runs great i have gone through fixing all the little things but I kept noticing the smell of gasoline. Upon removing the skid plate under the tranny, and getting to the external fuel pump that is mounted to the inside of the frame i noticed it was wet with fuel... I have tried cleaning it up to see if it is coming out of the fuel pump or the fuel lines, the fluid starts at the lower line i have not traced it back to see which tank it goes to..How would i determine if it is just a loose fuel line or the pump itself??? oh and the lower line that i think is the culprit turns the line on top is quiet stationary. I believe it is the hairpin connection, how would I tighten it if that is all that is needed?? any advice would be great advice.
You can't tighten the hairpin. If it's leaking there, it's because the seals have failed and the only fix is to replace that section of fuel line.
The pump will leak at the seams, so if you are just seeing fuel on one end or the other of the fuel pump then a hose is the culprit. If you see fuel on the side of the pump, the pump is the culprit. The external high pressure pumps aren't known to leak, so I'd be surprised if that's your problem.
