My trusty 88 Ranger 4-cyl, 5-speed manual has developed a problem - runs great when not under load, but seems to be running on not all cylinders under load (5th gear - 55 mph when I am accelerating) - replaced plugs, wires, filters, distributor cap - no change, Any Ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!
The first thing I would suspect is that you've got a loose baffle inside the muffler that is blocking exhaust under load. You can shake the exhaust and see if anything is rattling around in the muffler. The next thing I would suspect is that you have gunk and carbon built up in the throttle body and that needs to be cleaned out. Outside options are an ignition module problem or a vacuum leak. This truck is OBD1, so you can pull codes manually or with a scanner
