I have an old but great 1977 Dodge Pace Arrow with a 440 engine.
I was told the conversion to the new freon would destroy my compressor because it is to weak.
How true is this?
It's not true; But there is something you should be aware of.
R134a uses a much thinner organic lubricant. The mineral oil that is in an R12 system must be completely removed or removed as best as possible (there are synthetic lubes that will emulsify or absorb the old lubricant)
Other than that, it's often recommended that you don't use a full charge of R134a for the full charge of R12, but I haven't seen this in practice. I've converted several systems from R12 to R134a and the old way was to replace the seals and the receiver drier (where most of the lube collects)
