I have an Onan 7.5kw diesel genset HDKAJ in an 1999 Allegro. Sometimes it starts and runs without a problem. But often it cranks and starts but runs only briefly, for one to five seconds and oddly, the next day it starts and continues to run ok. Priming does not correct the problem. Fuel is ok and nearly full, oil level is ok. Main engine always starts and runs well. Any ideas?
In reference to the above model generator, I was wondering if there is anywhere I could purchase a repair manual. I need to replace the mother board in my unit, however I would like a repair manual to view, prior to attempting this procedure. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
I'm working on one of these now. There are codes that flash on the start switch of the unit. Do you have access to the switch on the gen set? It will flash 3 times to tell you that you have a service fault. Push the switch to OFF once, and it will flash the actual code. That should be a 2 part code. (ie: 1 flash followed by 4 flashes would mean Code 14, which is "Inverter Overfrequency Fault".)
These faults are listed in your Operator's Manual.
I have the same generator and a similar problem, except that mine runs for about 15 minutes before it shuts down. Since the coolant in the fill tank is still cold after 15 minutes, I may have a faulty thermostat, but I don’t know how to check for that.
Went to the web site Http://www.cumminsonan.com/rv/ as you suggested, but found no information that helped me. Did I miss something there? the FAQ's are very generic.
By the way the subject of my prolem should say "... starts but shuts down... but NOT every time.
Generator was working fine until i let the fuel run low and it quit.
after i filled up w/fuel the gen set would not turn over, batteries are fine.
is there fuzes on this unit.
it is installed in a 1998 itasc motor home.
HELP-HELP-HELP
I have the shutdown issue that is described by others here. The generator will run under VERY light load (5 amps or so) but if there is any significant load the engine will start speeding up and will then shut down with an error code 31 (engine over speed.) Obviously the load is causing the engine to over speed... but what is causing the engine to now over speed when just a few weeks before it worked properly?? It is counter intuitive, but could a restricted fuel filter cause this kind of behavior?? I suggest it is counter intuitive because it would not seem that the engine would over speed if it was starving for fuel.
Motorhome stored for six months, now generator will start but shut down when there is a slight draw. Everything is turned off in the motorhome. Its a 7.5 HDKAJ diesel. It will start up right away but then shut down again. I need to identify the fault codes yet? Can weak house batteries cause this?
If the lift pump runs and you have a good flow of fuel chances are the magnets on you rotor have broken and possibly torn the stator and sent pieded in the invertor, causing the unit to fail your unit is old enough to have that
My onan 7.5hdkaj is mounted in a 96 safari continental. generator recently totally serviced and several sensors replaced as well as radiator removed and cleaned chemically. after use of approximately one week for 6-10 hrs/day at 7500 ft we are now back at our usual 5,000 ft elevation. unit starts but puffs out big cloud of blue smoke then stops.
code is flashing blink, blink.
help, please
ps-can't find manual
Hi everyone;
I have a 2004 journey with a onan 75hdkaj, it runs fine on light load but gives me a single flash with code 33 under a/c load. I've replaced the coolant as recommended in the owner's manual and I still get the same code, I have water circulation and put a new radiator cap. I've also replaced the fuel filter, air filter and oil filter to no avail. does anyone know where the thermostat is located on the unit since I;m thinking that's my problem and the dealer wants to charge me 8 hours minimum to replace it. your recommendations will be highly appreciated.
I had a problem just recently and I remember from my boating days as a fishing charter Capt. that there are on 2 reasons a diesel won't run no fuel or no air my problem was the electric fuel pump quit working so I went to Advanced Auto parts and bought an over the counter one for $59.00 for a diesel motor and in 20 mintues I had it on and my Genset ran like it was new. Hope that I've been some help please let me know Thanks. Dennis
Hi Guy's,
I have the same problem with my Generator Onan 7.5 diesel.
I am guessing that perhaps the fuel filter is clogged ?. Whenever fuel is restricted to the engine it will run shortly until it starves of energy.
I am going to replace my fuel filter & see if it helps?

I've got a 7.5HDKAJ in service for the problem that it shut down after a few minutes of running (w/ cold coolant). My issue is that the drive belt (V-belt) to the water pump shredded, so no coolant circulation. Don't let anyone put just any belt in as a replacement. There is no third pully to make a tension adjustment so the belt has to be an exact replacement. Apparently too much tension on the belt will cause the front seal on the main PTO shaft to leak. The belt costs $6-7 but the biggest cost comes from having to drop/disassemble the Gen to get to the back end to replace the belt on the front of the Gen's engine.
I have an 2004 Allegro Bus 40TSP with a 7.5kw it starts, then stops and flashes 3 then 14 (the frequency thing). Oddly enough, the place where I store it has certified mechanics that started it up recently and it ran for 5 hours until I turned it off. The same day we went on a trip, I restarted it, it revved and immediately stopped with the above code.
Does this sound like your issue? Did you install the parts yourself?
