1999 Chevy Express Van - Will Not Start Fred 6-23-07
1999 Chevy Express Van, mileage 130000. Had been have a starting problem for sometime where it wouldn’t start on the first try...it would take at least three or four times before it would start. This problem would occur only on the first start in the morning after been sitting overnight. It started find every time during normal use during the day. If the vehicle sat longer for two days it would take even longer to start. Well, what ever the problem it finally failed completely because now it will not start at all. The fuel pump was replaced about a year ago and you can hear it running when you turn on the ignition. Service Engine Soon light has been on for about a year with the following OBD-II CODES:
P0452 Evaporative Emission Control System Pressure Sensor Low Input (replaced the gas tank cap but did not clear this error)
P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: 1999 Chevy Express Van - Will not crank & run Rex P. D'ozier 1-8-11
I have a 1999 & 2000 Chevrolet 2500 Express vans with V8 engines.
I have had the fuel pump & filter replaced in both of these vans.
The mileage on both are approximately 130,000 miles.
There is still a problem with both vans not cranking; you can hear the fuel pump click on with the ignition.
Sometimes the vans will crank on the first try & other times it is as if they are getting no fuel.
I have sprayed Ether into the air intake & the van will crank & sound like a diesel.
I replaced the gas cap thinking that the system was loosing pressure.
I have read there is a crank sensor & I have no idea where this would be located or if it could be the problem.
After the vans set for a day or so they will fire up & run normally.
ANY help you could give me with this would be greatly appreciated.

Ok if you poor fuel into intake and the vehicle runs id go with the fuel pump..on my 02 i went cheap and bought 2 of those ebay fuel pumps tha were about half the price and when i hooked a fuel guage on the rail the first time it had proper ful pressure but it was intermittent and sometimes would start and id get stuck all over town..so i changed it and it worked like a charm but lasted about 8 months and again same problem...this time no fuel pressure and if i remember correctly it ranges 60 psi when key turned on...both pumps ran whe key was turned on..i finally went with gm pump which was expensive and no problems since....this pump is critical for this van have some on spray carb spray into intake and if she starts go for the pump.......

I have a 2000 chevy Express and I bet some of you are having the same problem I had.For some reason these motors wear out the distributor cap and rotor quickly, we tried all kinds of fuel solutions when it wouldnt start but as soon as we changed the cap and rotor it fired right up,I have done it twice now in 4 years. The down side is the cap costs $89 ouch. Hope this helps some of you.

2002 Chevy Express van not getting fuel. The fuel pump is working. There is gas present at the gas line, just before the fuel meter.
Re: 1999 Chevy Express Van - Will Not Start Phil Feinstein 7-3-07
Maybe, but low fuel pressure won't explain the codes that you have. You're not paying me for this so my advice is just as valuable as your own.
Re: 1999 Chevy Express Van - Will Not Start Phil Feinstein 6-25-07
What you're describing sounds an awful lot like a collapsed catalytic converter.

Open up the exhaust right before the cat(s) if possible and try to start the engine. If the engine starts, then the catalytic converter(s) need to be replaced.

Hope that helps!

Re: 1999 Chevy Express Van - Will Not Start 5centz 5-21-10
If positive cable was to be replaced does it come with the alternator starter lead., the starter lead is the only one that is defective., just replacing the small lead to the starter would that work instead of replacing the whole system which costs like to 200.00 dollars.

I have a 1999 Chevy 2500 express van. it was having problems starting, but would eventually. we were driving on the highway and it hesitated when pushing the gas and then stopped all together. i have replaced the distributor/rotor with a new one, the ignition coil with a new-used one, i replaced the spark plugs and spark plug wires with new ones. i removed the fuel injector, cleaned the tubes and placed it back. the van started for about 30 secs then cut off and would not start again. the battery checks out good by the auto parts store

Re: 1999 Chevy Express Van - new motor replacement Willma 8-15-13
I had a new engine put in my 1999 Chevrolet 1500 express van. I also had a new radiator, oil filter and a bunch of other parts placed in the van.

Shortly after driving the van, the "check gages" light came on. I checked my oil--no oil. I put in over 8 quarts of oil (at different times) in the van which supposed to have a new engine in it. It cost me $5096.00. When I brought it back to the mechanic, he said that I should have replaced the oil filter after 500 miles and every 500 miles that I drive it. In the few months that I have had the van back, I have only put on about 900-1000 miles. The mechanic said that I had over 8000 miles on it. Then he said that the warranty would not be honored if I did not follow his instructions. How many times should I replace the oil filter and why should it be changed right after it was put in less that 4 months ago?

I have replaced the fuel filter but still very hard to start. I have to pump the gas pedal over and over and hold the pedal down to get it to start. If it sits for a day of two it will do the same and become difficult to start. Once it does start it runs great and starts with no problem? What should I door check?

Bought a 2000 Chevy Express Van that ran beautifully for a week, now it totally dead. Won't start at all. Before it died it said check engine; battery cables.....done but still dead. Worse car I've ever owned. Its beautiful but it would make a better shed the van.
Re: 1999 Chevy Express Van - Will Not Start Fred 7-3-07
With due respect, I suspect a fuel problem. When cranking it acts like it wants to start (would seem to eliminate a no spark issue. Even though I can hear the fuel pump buzzing when the ignition is turned on there seems to be little fuel pressure when depressing the fuel valve stem (fuel leaks out but does not squirt with pressure).
Re: 1999 Chevy Express Van - Will Not Start Fred 7-4-07
It turned out to be a fuel pressure problem as I suspected. Thanks, to Joe, I tried his suggestion to someone else with a similar problem to do a quick test by jump starting vehicle (used my battery charger). It started up right away. I will probably end up replacing the fuel pump though. As explained, due to a weak fuel pump and a weak battery it doesn't build up enough fuel pressure to start. The reason it starts normally on first try during the rest of the day is because the fuel pressure is holding enough to start but leaks out overnight due to a bad check valve in the fuel pump.
Still have the error codes to fix which I didn't think had anything to do with why it didn't start (they've been on for sometime before I had the starting problem).

When I crank the engine I don't see the check engine in cluster,I checked it with scanner it says can't communicate,I replace the ECM it still doing same thing. What do I do now ?
Re: 1999 Chevy Express Van - Will Not Start Ray 5-17-09
If you have fuel pressure it's most likely not your fuel pump. Check to see if you have a check engine code with a obdii scan tool. Harbor Freight has one for $40 (cheapest around and it comes in handy all the time, I got mine on sale for $30). For some reason the check engine light doesn't come on for some of the codes that get tripped. Most likely it's your crank position sensor, at least mine was. Cheapest I found was at AutoZone for $55 (with 2 year warranty, instead of a year with the oem version) If you have any questions just email me. The sensor took me 5 minutes to change and it's very easy to do. Good luck.

Re: 1999 Chevy Express Van - Will Not Start has no spark at all tony redmond 8-29-10
Hi Dan my name is tony, did you find out what the reason is for not having a spark, I'm having the same problem with my chevy express 3500 it is a 1999 also. I would be very gratefull if you could inform me if you resolved the situation andwhat you did to fix it. Thank you.
Re: re: 1999 Chevy Express Van - Will Not Start sometimes. I can hear the fuel pump running. I dumped gas in the intake while someone turned the key and it ran until i stopped dumping gas in it. Dominique Chance 8-4-10
I had the same problem. You have to use a dealer fuel pump. I replaced my fuel pump with a part from advance auto. And I had starting problems. The aftermarket fuel pumps don't get it to the right pressure. I bought the expensive dealer part and now my 1999 chevy express 1500 starts fine everyday. I had starting problems for a year until it wouldn't start one day after that aftermarket part.

Re: 1999 Chevy Express Van - Will Not Start Fred 10-21-14
I have a 1999 Express van with the 4.3 six cylinder. I was experiencing problems with the van not turning on. The problem was intermittent so that made it difficult to diagnose. One day I noticed that the pump would not turn on when i turned the key. I went below to where the fuel pump wiring harness connects to the main power harness of the van. This is the connector that you remove when you are dropping the gas tank. Well i found that the plug itself was not making good contact inside. I cleaned the connector and sprayed some dielectric grease and that solved the starting problem for me. I hope this information helps someone out there because i know how frustrating it can be when you have tried everything and nothing seems to work. Good luck.
