I have a 1996 Mazda B2300 (Ford Ranger) w/75k miles on it. The check engine light is on and the code which comes up is P0761. The truck seems to drive fine, but I did notice that the OD on/off button doesn't seem to work. At least the OD off light never lights when the button is pushed. I replaced the Shift Solenoid 3 (SS3), but nothing seems to have changed. I can fix the problem myself, but I don't have the electronic diagnostic equipment for diagnosis. Can anyone give me suggestions as to what might be the problem?
Did you ever check the OD cancel switch for continuity? I've traced a few of these back to a bad OD cancel switch.
The switch in the shift lever has a round trim ring holding it in. pop the ring off and the switch will slide out and you can test it for continuity with an Ohmmeter.
when testing the continuity of the OD cancel switch, I get intermittent continuity. The continuity is intermittent when the button is on the way down and on the way up. At the "bottom", when it is pushed all the way down, there is no continuity unless I play with the button, then it is intermittent.
What is the proper behavior of the switch? How can I verify the switch is the problem? Is there a way to fool the truck into believing the switch is installed and working so I can test the OD functionality in the truck?
You should have continuity only when the button is down and you should have continuity the entire time you hold it. If you had no continuity at all, I'd say the LED was burned out, but this looks like the contacts have failed or the LED has shorted.
Unfortunately the switch is a dealer-only part and might not be in stock.
The only way to fool the transmission into thinking that the switch is there is to provide the correct resistance. Wrong resistance or a plain jumper WILL SHORT THE CONTROLLER!
