MY GENERATOR WILL START AND AS SOON AS I RELEASE THE START BUTTON IT DIES. MY ONAN MECHANIC SAYS THE RECTIFIER IS SHORTED. DOESNT THE RECTIFIER CHANGE THE D/C TO A/C IN THE GENERATOR. WILL THIS KEEP THE GENERATOR FROM RUNNING?

Actually, a rectifer changes AC to DC. Here are a few things to check.
1. Resistor R1 may be open
2. Defective run ignition relay K3
3. Oil level may be low.
4. Switch S3, Low oil pressure switch may be defective.

It could be the problem but to get you accurate info we need your model number and the letter at the end. I can get you a faster answer if you can post at the link in the forum..

Doyle, I had the same problem and had to replace the PC board under the cover. That fixed it.

I have 6500 onan gen it will not start there is no fire at plugs there is fire at both sides of coil when turning engine over what could be the problem
