Looking for opinions RE: 8v71 Idle Newby 4-23-01
I have heard two opinions about how to leave my engine idling. Some say the fast idle was/is more for the original AC use while sitting still. Therefor not needed in an RV application. The other argument is that the Detroit Deisel does not oil well at low idle while sitting a longer period of time. Therefore use the fast idle.???

I too have heard these arguements as I have a 6V92 but I am told by a person who has lived 30 years with detroits that it is not so!!an 8V or 6V has about 12 pound oilo pressure while idling at 650 RPM and will do it all day with no harm to the bearings. it is true it will cause a little carbon to build but thats all.. the main objection is that it tends to drip oil from its weep tubes if it idles slow too long, but I have done it several times with no bad results
