My water heater is electric, and gas,, Now my problem is for some reason it seams I dont get any hot water, now I have a good pilot light burning but no flames ever seem to come on!!! and I think the electric heater coild is burnt out, becuse it doesnt seem to work either. tell me, If I were to hook up to the external water supply line, and put on the electric coil and if for some reason the water supply line was not supplying water would the water in the tank drain out enough to cause the coil to burn up?

In my heater, and this is probably true of all, the cold comes in the bottom and the hot water is taken from the top of the tank. Unless you open the drain plug, you couldn't empty the water beyond the upper water fitting.
