I'm an Automotive Technician who is not at all familiar with RV's, so please give me some slack if I sound a little green.
I'm not sure about this, but do RV's have any system allowing two batteries to be charged by the alternator, yet allow one to be the main operation battery, and a second being a reserve for in case the main battery goes dead? This needs to allow the vehicle to be started on the reserve battery if the main battery were to fully discharge.
If so, what component is used for doing this and where can I purchase one?
The reason I'm asking is the owner of the company I work at is creating a "around the world camper" out of a very unique vehicle called a Gelaendewagen. It is a very slow project (for lack of a final design and it's a 120 hp engine driving a 6.000 lb vehicle), but an interesting one anyhow.
We are also looking into siding for this great endevor. Does anyone know of a good lightweight material to use? I was thinking of something similar to what they use on RV's or moving trucks. What is a good lightweight product and who sells it?
I'm looking to also add a solar panel to vehicle to charge the batteries. Do RV's have something like this? If so, how can I get a book or a schematic on the correct routing and what special components are needed?
