As a refrigeration mechanic I agree with Harold that you most likely have a slow refrigerant leak. If your compressor runs, rather than just diming the lights for 15 seconds before triping the internal overload, for a short period than turns off you most likely have a high quality Air Conditioner that should be fixed. Cheap Air Conditioners will not have the low pressure safety switch and will suck moisture laden air into the compressor causing acid build up that will cause the motor windings to short out.
SIMILAR PROBLEM - DIFFERENT SOLUTION
If your compressor dims the lights for roughly ten to twenty seconds or blows non-time delay fuses then the compressor is not starting. Wait ten minutes!!! (And install time-delay fuses (type FRN or equivelant)) If the compressor still does not start then most likely it is frozen/burned out and needs replacing. If it starts you need to buy a five minuite time delay ($25-$50) to prevent compressor damage (and waisted electricity) from trying to start when the head pressure is high. |
