We have had our motor home in storage for a few years. When it went in everything was working great..but now the air conditioner doesn't run. The fan will run just fine, but when we switch it to A/C the compressor starts up for a few seconds then quits. Any suggestions on what might be causing this?

BY THE SOUND OF IT YOUR AC HAS A LOW PRESSURE SWITCH ANDWHEN THE FREON PRESSURE DROPS IT TURNS OF THE COMPRESSURE. I RECOMMEND THAT YOU HAVE IT LOOKED AT AND THE FREON PRESSURE CHECKED. YOU CAN REMOVE THE COVER AND SEE IF THERE IS ANY SIGNS OF OIL ON ANY OF THE TUBEING ESPECIALLY AT ANY JOINTS. IF THERE IS THIS IS THE SOURCE AND WILL HAVE TO BE REPAIRED. HAROLD
HI
Coleman or Dometic or carier??
If compressor bad, breaker would kick off. Could be a bad run condensor, there is a way to test them, but you have to know what you're doing. Take the outside cover off, then the small cover for the electrical conector and check for accumulation of dirt & moisture.
On the top of the compressor, the is a small cap with a thermo switch, check it out, can be test with a soldering gun & VOM.
Those are sealed unit, are not prone to leak as the automotive one.
repost result.

As a refrigeration mechanic I agree with Harold that you most likely have a slow refrigerant leak. If your compressor runs, rather than just diming the lights for 15 seconds before triping the internal overload, for a short period than turns off you most likely have a high quality Air Conditioner that should be fixed. Cheap Air Conditioners will not have the low pressure safety switch and will suck moisture laden air into the compressor causing acid build up that will cause the motor windings to short out.

If your compressor dims the lights for roughly ten to twenty seconds or blows non-time delay fuses then the compressor is not starting. Wait ten minutes!!! (And install time-delay fuses (type FRN or equivelant)) If the compressor still does not start then most likely it is frozen/burned out and needs replacing. If it starts you need to buy a five minuite time delay ($25-$50) to prevent compressor damage (and waisted electricity) from trying to start when the head pressure is high.
