My onan generator cranked and ran fine for about 30 minutes then quit. It will crank up but will only run a few seconds and die. IT had been sitting about a month since I last ran it. Any ideas? Trash in gas line or filter? Oil level is OK and has new points/plug etc.
After cranking remove the spark plug facing out, and look if it's wet, if wet, you got gas going to the cylinder. Then lay the spark plug on the top of the engine attached to the wire and crank it a bit, see if small spark, if yes adjust the valve. Procedure should be in the gen manual.

If all the checks are ok..I went through same thing..found rectifier (sp) circuit break down..supplied 120v for short time then quit shutting down system. Part was 225,total was 385 to have done, but now works fine.

RAY..THE PERSON WHO SOLD MY UNIT TO ME TOLD ME I ONLY HAD TO CRANK ONCE A MONTH.....BULL!!. I FOUND OUT THE HARD WAY YOU NEED TO CRANK..PUT A LOAD ION AND RUN FOR 30 MINUTES EVERY WEEK...EVERY WEEK...NOT EVERY MONTH.
I DID ANOTHER STUPID THING..I LET FUEL IN AUX TANK RUN OUT AND TRIED TO CRANK.
I FILLED IT UP..TRIED TO CRANK..NO GO.
TOOK FUEL PUMP APART..FILTER DIRTY. CLEANED. PUT BACK..NO GO.
UNSCREW THE STEEL FUEL LINE COMING FROM FUEL PUMP..PUT A RUBBER HOSE TO IT(THIS IS WHAT BOOK SAYS) TURNED GEN OVER..NO FUEL PURGING. FIGURED IT WAS THE FUEL PUMP AND HAVE TO REPLACE. BE CAREFUL DOING THIS.NEED TO SLIDE UNIT OUT.
GOT A WILD HAIR..(DON'T DO THIS AT HOME!) TOOK A HYPO NEEDLE...SLIDE GEN OUT..SQUIRTED NEEDLE FULL OF FUEL INTO CARBERATOR..HIT STARTER..BEEN RUNNING GREAT EVER SINCE.
BOOK DOES NOT TELL YOU TO PRIME...WRONG!.... DO IT!
MAYBE THIS WILL HELP SOMEONE.
