1999 Windstar heater problem William Gandy 12-8-04
1999 Windstar heater does not work. Makes a knocking sound behind the radio when heater turned on. Dealer say it's "heater actuator" and it will cost $200-225 to fix. Radio console panel must be removed to get to it. Is this something I can do (I'm minimally talented mechanically) or am I best to have dealer do it? How much does part itself cost?

I did this last year on *MY* Windstar!

There's an electric motor that controls the blend door to make the heater hot or cold. the knocking you are hearing is the gears coming apart and the motor still spinning.

Once you pull the radio out (You need the tools that fit into the holes on the face. The tools are a couple of bucks and the radio pulls out in seconds), the actuator is right there and held into the side of the heater case with 3 screws (6mm or 8mm, I think)1/4" drive with a 10" or 12" extension bar and a wobble joint on the end worked perfectly - 2 screws on top, one on bottom (do the bottom one from under the dash)

TAKE THE OLD ONE OUT BEFORE ORDERING A NEW ONE!! There are 3 part listings, you need the old one to make sure you get the right one!

The part itself is about $45 to $50 and may be in stock at the larger dealers.

It sounds to me like they are trying to charge you 1.5 to 2 hours to do a 15 minute job.

Hope that helps!

Consider this too. My 2000 Windstar Van had the arm of the blend door break off which basically means the actuator was working fine but couldn't turn the door. A real pain if you ask me. I'll never buy another Ford! Fix Or Repair Daily - That's what FORD stands for.
