The tag is usually attached to the back of the housing (tail shaft housing; where the drive shaft attaches to the trans) or to the trans pan. The Orange tag really only applies to transmissions in the warrantee period (3 years, 36,000 miles). After that, it's fair game.
You're correct about the evolution; electronic controls were supposed to increase fuel efficiancy and give smooth shifts. Anyone who has worked on an E4OD can tell you it was a good idea that really didn't translate well into the real world (and they'll tell you in very colorful terms). Of course, OBD2 is supposed to make diagnostics faster as well. I never sprung for the $450 upgrade for my scanner because I used the SBDS machine. Looking back, I should have. Any word on what the TSB for the computer upgrade is looking for? |
