Hydro Flame 8500 blower runs but random ignition Paul Ramsbey 10-26-09
Hi, I read your troubleshooting guide on the Hydro Flame furnace and thank you for posting it. I am having a problem where sometimes my furnace fires and sometimes the blower runs but there is no ignition. I have verified that I am always getting 12V to the top white wire on the board indicating the sail switch and hi limit are both closed. Sometimes I get power to the gas valve and sometimes I do not. If there is power, it ignites. I've cleaned all the connections on the board and can't seem to figure out why it works sometimes and why it doesn't others? Could the board be bad? I was told that when a board goes bad it is done - it won't work sometimes and not work other times. What are your thought and do you have a board for a Hydro Flame model 8531 - II? The board has the following number on it 86-235094-091. The camper is a '94 so I assume that is the vintage of the furnace.

Thank you very much for your assistance!

Hi Paul, Yes it is possible for a board to be intermittent. If possible take it to an RV shop and have it tested. Shouldn't cost anything. It's the easiest and first thing I check after an exam of connections etc. Sounds like you've done a pretty good job of troubleshooting so far. I'd almost bet it's a bad board. They can be found on the internet. Dinosaur brand is a good board. Usually more reliable and have a better warranty and price than the Atwood boards. Should be around $100 + -. Of course you should consider buying it at the shop that checks the board for you, if it's close to that price it's not a ripoff, but a lot more look elsewhere. Check dinosaurelectronics.com. Good luck

Thank you very much Keith. I have a call into the dealer I got the camper from to see if they have a CB tester and will go from there.

To follow up on my original post/problem. Dealer did not return my calls so I took a chance and ordered a new ignitor board on line and that fixed the problem. Therefore, I did have a board which would intermittently - but towards the end it mostly did NOT work. Thanks again for your assistance, Keith!

I have an simialr hydroflame issue. When I take the board to the service provider it always tests positive. When I take the RV to the service provider the furnace always works. The rest of the time it works intermittently and for the last 6 months not at all. Not easy to replace given size issues and besides I would rather pay to repair something than just throw it away. In an 88 unit, low miles, probably very little usage on the furnace.

I have a similar issue with a 8520. The blower comes on but will not ignite. Checked the board and all systems seemed to be working but the igniter would not fire. Talked to a dealer and he stated common problem and sold me an igniter. Installed the igniter and worked fine for about 48 hours. Now having the same issue, fan comes on, but no sound from the igniter indicating that it is attempting to fire and NO HEAT. The red light comes on and indicates flame sense failure. Could the new igniter just be bad or the board. Any suggestions?

Man, glad i'm not the only one with this Prob, mines a Hydro flame 8531, in an old 88 Terry resort.Same thing, never know if your gonna wake up at 3:AM froze or not, sometimes goes 3 weekends no probs, then boom.Paul,Glad the board did the trick,i can,t find a replacement furnace identical, with Elec harness and Propane inlet both on Left like mine, all appear to be on right side of unit, over the exhaust(which seems like an Odd place to me.
I'm gonna take a chance, oder a new $100 Board and see how it goes this spring, will come back to post if that did the trick..
