I have a Fleetwood Savannah 5th wheel with an Atwood Excalibur 8500-III series furnace in it...it starts up and fan runs but the burner will not ignite. so far from searching online i have narrowed it down to possibly the limit switch,sail switch,circuit board, or any combination of the three. my question is...where is the limit switch located and will i need to remove the furnace unit from the camper to replace it? i can't find any repair procedures or locations of this switch online.

I am unable to get the camper to a service center... the engine in my truck used to pull the camper is toast. would an HVAC man be able to check it? he is a family friend in the HVAC business for 15-20 years. If so,what is the proper way to test the board and what does he look for?
Hi Aaron, The limit switch is behind the blower fan/motor. You don't have to remove the furnace to replace it, just the motor. First check for dirt/lint on the plug for the board, and wiggle all spade connectors you can see to assure a good connection. Then the easiest item to check first and is often the culprit, is the circuit board. Most RV shops will check them for free. If it's good, then start looking elsewhere. Check for lint in the sail switch also. Good luck
Hi Aaron, It takes a 12 volt Ignitor Board Tester. It runs the board thru it's cycle and shows if it has a problem. It's easy to remove the board. Looking at the furnace from the door side it's on the far left side, remove a wingnut, connector plug, and spark wire lead and pull it out. If your friend has a tester for 12V boards he should be able to test it. Good luck

Im having a similar problem. The fan runs when the thermostat is turned to 'cool' or 'fan' but not when turned to 'heat'. I took the board out and noticed some corrosion in the gold, but Im not sure if the board is the problem because the fan still works, although when the Tstat is on 'heat' the fan wont start at all (so I assume its not the sail switch.)On the other hand I cant see what else it could be besides the board. Any tips on what I should check before I start replacing parts?
Hi Rob, I emailed you back rather than build on this thread. Anyone else have an idea? To me the cool and fan switch shouldn't run the furnace. Since I can't see it, I'm gracefully bowing out of this one. Hope someone else has some ideas for Rob. Good luck
Thanks, but im pretty sure its not the Tstat, I jumpered the wires together,just outside the furnace, and still nothing. Where is the timer relay, and how can I check it?
Hi Rob, The board doesn't control the fan on your model unless you have the Fan Control (Fan50) board replacement. The sail switch doesn't do anything until the fan is at proper speed. Try taking the two blue wires (thermostat) loose where the wiring loom enters outside the furnace and hold them together and see if the furnace works ok. If so I'd look at a new thermostat or wiring problem in between. If not possibly the timer relay. Hard to tell without being there, but may get you going. Good luck
Hello,my Atwood Ex 8500-III screams almost every time it starts,it lasts for a few minutes and then gets quiet.Is it the motor or blower assembly.It is getting worse and worse to were it wakes us all up at night and early morning.My trailer is a 97 avion westport so furnace would be 12 years old.Any input would be nice,thanks Fred
