I have an rv with dual ac units. I have a toggle switch that switches between the front and back unit. I was running on the back unit and toggles to the front and it kicked on for about 3 seconds, sounded like the compressor was firing up, then it shut off. Circuit breakers are fine, and the back unit responded when i switched back to it, but the front unit no longer has any signs of life, no low power light, no response at all when switched to it. I am wondering where to start the trouble shooting at and what I should be looking for as a possible problem. I will be testing the toggle switch with a miliamp meter when the sun comes up.
Could be the start capacitor on the front unit went bad. Have to take the cover off on the roof to get to it. It will be covered by a metal plate that you will have to remove to gain access to it. Make sure all ac power is shut down before getting into it. As it will bite even without the power on. As it holds a charge to help the compressor start.
Sounds to me that either the breaker is bad or the units solid state board at the controls section of the inside portion has shorted out. I would start with taking the grille off inside and opening up the main power box and check for 220 volts with the generator running. If you have power it will be the board or selector switch at that point.
