I recently purchased a 1985 mallard. in checking all the appliances, i find the fridge not getting cold. how long should it take for this to get cold? i did see a recall on-line that this unit did not recieve. a new eybrow with updated wiring. i am not sure if this can be done anymore? anyway, the gas system seems to light and stay lit. it gets hot in the back but no cooling in the cabinet. the electric portion seems to work too, but still no cooling. i don't see any evidence of any ammonia leaks or smell or powder. any assistance would be appreciated. thank you
Hi Pete, Given the age, I'd say the cooling unit has probably gone by the wayside. One way to check for sure is to direct wire the 120V heating element. This by passes the electronic controls and if it is heating, and the fridge isn't cooling, put in a rebuilt cooling unit or better yet a new fridge. You should have a cold fridge in about 8 hours + - If you don't feel comfortable doing this, have an RV tech do it. Good luck!
I have a 1984 Travelcraft class C MH that hadn't been used in 11 yrs. We are fixin it up again. The frig has the same problem as Pete's. It had a recall replacement eyebrow put in 1993. The gas lights and stays lit. The coils get hot and the burner. Unlike Pete, the freezer cools down to 42. The frig doesn't cool.
After running a few hours, the freezer temp goes up again to 55F. So I shut it down for 5 minutes and start it up again. Doing this for 4 days now hoping it will 'kick in'. I hear gurgling noises in the coils like a chemical being circulated and the coils get hot on startup and then stop.
Someone said to take the frig out and turn it upside down to mix the chemicals since it hadn't been used in so long and to do this 2 or 3 times. I chuckled. I have no mechanical talent and would break the unit for sure.
No ammonia leaks or powder or smell like Pete said about his.
I'm pretty stubborn I guess to keep trying but I really don't want to put out $1500 (inc parts and installation) or more for a new frig. My pocketbook hurts right now.
What do you think the chance of the frig "coming back to life" is? 50-50? less? more? When should I say enough?
My frig while running on gas will turn itself off. Somtimes 2 or 3 times a night other times once a week. The red check light will be on. We then turn the switch off then to gas again and it starts up again. Fine while we are there to but we can't trust it with food in it if we leave for any lenght of time.
