My car has a surge at about 40-50 mph. Phil helped me on this one. I believe the transmission modulator is bad; it has oil in the line. Also, I started hearing a pop in the exhaust at the same time. It only happens when at the those aforementioned speeds. If accelerate it's ok or even slow down. Just when it is held at the constant speed these few things happen. Advice, direction.
Typically, pop in the carb is a timing problem and pop in the exhaust is a raw fuel problem. Since you found trans fluid in the vacuum line for the modulator, I'd suspect the pop might be related to the trans fluid being sucked into the engine from the vacuum hose. If it isn't, it could be fuel dribbling from the carb into the engine. Just 2 off the top of my head.
Keep in mind that when the throttle plates close, vacuum goes up and when they open vacuum goes down.
The modulator is easy toreplace but needs a pro to adjust if needed, pay the 100 bucks and have a trany shop do it, if they try to upsell you walk out. Good Luck
